Solana Speeds Up with Alpenglow Upgrade in Q3 2026

The Solana network is set for a significant upgrade in Q3 2026 with the Alpenglow update, which promises to reduce transaction finality times from around 12.8 seconds to just 100-150 milliseconds.

This represents a major speed boost for the network, and one that could have far-reaching implications for traders, DeFi protocols, and tokenized assets.

The Alpenglow upgrade will replace two of Solana's core consensus mechanisms, Proof of History and Tower Byzantine Fault Tolerance, with new systems called Votor and Rotor. This change is expected to simplify the network's processing load and free up capacity for user transactions.

One of the most significant changes will be the removal of on-chain vote transactions, which currently consume a lot of network resources.
