FCA Warns Football Clubs Over Unauthorized Crypto Sponsors
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued a warning to football clubs regarding sponsorship deals with unauthorized crypto firms and trading platforms. The regulator is concerned that these partnerships may expose the clubs to legal liability, money laundering risk, and reputational damage.
The FCA has written to clubs urging them to conduct stronger checks on sponsors before signing or renewing deals. This includes verifying whether a sponsor is authorized to operate in the UK, has the necessary financial-promotion approvals, and adheres to anti-money laundering (AML) controls.
Football clubs have become prime targets for crypto and trading firms due to their instant reach, loyal audiences, and global visibility. However, this also creates a risk of clubs being tied to financial products that their fans were never legally meant to use.
