Massachusetts City Weighs Ban on Crypto ATMs Amid Rising Fraud Concerns
The city of Haverhill is reviewing a proposal to ban cryptocurrency ATMs due to growing concerns over financial fraud and limited consumer protections. The measure, supported by Mayor Melinda E. Barrett, would prohibit all crypto ATMs within city limits and require operators to remove machines within 60 days or face $300 per day fines.
The debate over crypto ATMs reflects a broader regulatory dilemma. While some argue that banning ATMs fails to address root causes of fraud, others suggest that stronger compliance frameworks and clear federal rules could provide better protection without restricting access.
