Steam Workshop Hijacked by Malware in Widespread Crypto Wallet Heist

Kaspersky researchers have uncovered a malware campaign spreading through Steam Workshop, one of gaming's most trusted content platforms. The malicious Wallpaper Engine packages were disguised as animated desktop wallpapers and used anime-style female characters as cover images to gain credibility with gamers.

The attackers exploited the trust factor of the platform to distribute the malware with minimal friction for potential victims. The application's core feature, which allows executable programs to run directly on a Windows machine, was leveraged to deploy malicious payloads under the appearance of legitimate content.

Some wallpapers bundled malware directly within the download package, while others concealed payloads inside password-protected archives that unpacked silently after installation. Kaspersky confirmed it had identified dozens of infected wallpaper packages available through Steam Workshop, with many reaching thousands or even tens of thousands of downloads.
