Ethereum Unveils Ambitious Multi-Year Overhaul to Counter Quantum Threats

Ethereum's next major rebuild is taking shape under the guidance of co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The overhaul, dubbed 'Strawmap,' involves seven hard forks between 2026 and 2030 to address quantum computing threats. At the center of this plan is the Hegota hard fork, targeted for late Q3 or Q4 of 2026.

The goal of Strawmap is to ensure Ethereum's resilience against emerging threats by prioritizing three key areas: quantum resistance, statelessness through Verkle Trees, and operational simplification. The Hegota fork will lay the groundwork with native post-quantum signature support via EIP-8141 and enforced inclusion lists through FOCIL (Forced Inclusion Lists) in EIP-7805.

Buterin has acknowledged a 20% probability of a significant quantum breakthrough before 2030, known as 'Q-Day.' This timeline is somewhat accelerated due to growing concerns about the impact of quantum computing on current cryptographic standards. The Verkle Trees component aims to reduce hardware requirements for running nodes by enabling statelessness.
