Hoskinson: Cardano Not Compromised by SecondFi Breach

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has reassured the ADA community that the blockchain itself was not compromised in a recent security incident involving SecondFi. The breach, which affected thousands of users and resulted in significant losses, occurred at an application level rather than at the core infrastructure of Cardano.

Hoskinson drew parallels with Microsoft's Windows platform to illustrate his point. He argued that when third-party applications on Windows contain bugs or security flaws, it is not the operating system itself that is compromised.

The incident involved SecondFi (formerly Yoroi Wallet), a neo-finance application owned by EMURGO, one of Cardano's founding entities. The attackers exploited vulnerabilities in the wallet's address and transaction-signing layer to initiate unauthorized transactions, resulting in an estimated 16 million ADA stolen from 374 wallets.

SecondFi has since deployed a security patch and is working with external auditors to verify customer holdings. The company has also set up a claims process for affected users to facilitate compensation and recovery efforts.
