Japan PM Sees Crypto as Rare Chance to Fix Economic Woes
Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has called Bitcoin and cryptocurrency a 'once-in-a-century opportunity' to address the country's economic challenges, such as regional stagnation and population decline. In a recent speech at WebX 2025 in Tokyo, Ishiba linked Web3 technology to social innovation and pledged government support for the industry.
The Prime Minister announced plans to introduce tax reforms in 2026, which aim to lower crypto tax rates and create a more attractive regulatory environment for institutional investors. This move is seen as an effort to draw more investment to Japan's digital asset market.
However, Ishiba also expressed caution about Bitcoin being used as a national reserve asset, indicating that the administration's enthusiasm for cryptocurrency has its limits. Despite this, the Prime Minister's comments have been welcomed by the crypto community in Japan.
