Armstrong: Self-Custody Crucial for Reaching Next Billion Crypto Users

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong emphasized the importance of self-custody wallets for reaching the next billion users in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Armstrong pointed out that while alternatives like the Coinbase app work well in developed countries with clear regulations, they are not scalable globally. He stated that 'self custody is the only way' to get to 1 billion+ people benefiting from an open financial system, as it offers lower friction onboarding and can be available globally.

Armstrong also highlighted the relevance of self-custody for agentic adoption, a future driver of blockchain growth. He noted that agents need to reach funds to complete their assigned tasks, and self-custody provides the 'better format' for this process.
