California Teens Arrested in Cryptocurrency Heist Plot
Authorities have charged two California teenagers with various crimes related to an alleged plot to steal tens of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency from a Scottsdale couple's digital assets.
The suspects, 17-year-old Jackson Sullivan and 16-year-old Skylar Lapaille, drove from California to Scottsdale after learning that the couple possessed $66 million in cryptocurrency. According to court documents, they used disguises and specialized technology to carry out their plan.
The suspects posed as delivery workers when they arrived at the victims' home on January 31st. When the male victim opened the door, they allegedly forced their way inside and assaulted him before demanding access to his bitcoin. They also tied up another person in the house, but were interrupted by the victim's adult son who was hiding in the back of the house.
The suspects fled the scene, leading police on a pursuit that eventually ended when they drove into a dead end at a shopping center. Both teens were arrested and later released one of them on bail with an ankle monitoring device.
