Alberta Court Upholds Injunction Against Bitcoin Mining Operation
The Alberta Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal by Persist Oil and Gas Inc., upholding a permanent injunction against the company's bitcoin mining operation.
The court found that the lessee's use of the land for cryptocurrency mining breached a surface rights lease, which was originally executed in 1999.
The lease granted access to a road and gas compressor site for purposes related to hydrocarbon exploration and production. However, the appeal court ruled that bitcoin mining did not fall within the scope of the lease's permitted uses.
