Romanian Property Registry Wiped Out by Hacker, Blockchain Interest Spikes

A Romanian property registry was wiped out by a hacker in July 2026, highlighting the risks of centralized databases and sparking interest in blockchain technology.

The attack on the National Catalogue and Land Registry Agency (ANCPI) disabled the entire system for several days, preventing notaries from issuing ownership documents, registering new property transactions, or recording mortgages. The hacker, later identified as Zakaria Mahdjoub, allegedly stole large amounts of data, including sensitive information about citizens.

The hacker demanded a ransom in exchange for restoring access to the data and threatened to destroy it if no payment was made. After the Romanian authorities refused to pay, the attacker deleted the compromised databases and systems.

The incident raised questions about the vulnerability of centralized databases and the potential benefits of blockchain-based solutions. Proponents argue that decentralized networks can reduce the risk of data breaches and ensure the integrity of property records.
