Algorand Unveils Quantum Security Upgrade Roadmap for 2027

Algorand has announced a major security upgrade to prepare for the quantum era by 2027. This move comes as the crypto industry is increasingly acknowledging the importance of early preparation for Q-Day, when quantum computers are expected to break modern encryption algorithms.

The Algorand Foundation's roadmap includes implementing post-quantum protection mechanisms by the end of 2027. The first phases will kick off in Q3 2026 and include native support for Falcon-1024 post-quantum accounts, hybrid accounts combining classical and post-quantum signatures, and updates to the SDK, AlgoKit, and Pera Wallet.

The foundation emphasized that preparation for the quantum era is crucial, as blockchains are built to last for years to come. They also cited recent research by Google Quantum AI, which found that a powerful quantum computer could run Shor's algorithm using fewer than 500,000 physical qubits.
