SEC Charges Crypto Executive Donald Basile with $16M Fraud Scheme
The SEC has filed a lawsuit against Donald Basile, accusing him of running a $16 million cryptocurrency fraud scheme through his companies Monsoon Blockchain Corp. and GIBF GP Inc.
Basile allegedly sold 'insured' tokens known as Bitcoin Latinum to hundreds of investors, claiming that their funds would be used to support the token's value. However, no insurance company provided coverage for these claims, and millions of dollars were diverted to personal spending, including real estate purchases, credit card payments, and the acquisition of a $160,000 horse.
The SEC is seeking permanent injunctions, repayment of allegedly ill-gotten gains with interest, civil penalties, and a ban on Basile's participation in securities offerings. The agency also wants an officer-and-director bar preventing him from leading public companies in the future.
