Donna Police Warn Residents About Cryptocurrency Scams Targeting Older Adults

The Donna Police Department in Texas is warning residents about an emerging threat of cryptocurrency scams that target older adults and local business employees. Scammers are using various channels, including phone calls, texts, and emails, to deceive people into paying a 'fine' or settling a supposed warrant by transferring funds through Bitcoin machines located at gas stations.

A local victim reportedly lost $90,000 in one of these scams, police said. According to Detective Orlando Vera, once the money is sent through a Bitcoin machine, it's almost impossible to recover.

Bitcoin, being a decentralized system, doesn't have a centralized authority that can reverse transactions like banks do. As a result, victims are left with no recourse to retrieve their lost funds.

The Donna police advise anyone who receives these calls or messages not to follow the instructions. Instead, they should file a report, which will be forwarded to the FBI for further investigation.
