Billionaire-in-Exile Miles Guo Sentenced to 30 Years for $1 Billion Crypto and Securities Fraud
Miles Guo, also known as Ho Wan Kwok, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a $1 billion fraud scheme. The scheme, which ran from 2018 to March 2023, targeted mostly Chinese dissidents and followers of Guo's political media empire.
The fraud involved three main vehicles: GTV Media Group, a luxury membership program called G|CLUBS, and the Himalaya Exchange, a crypto platform that was used as a vehicle for misappropriation. A 2020 stock offering through GTV raised $452 million, while the Himalaya Exchange pulled in another $262 million with its H-Coin token.
Total investor losses exceeded $1 billion, with some estimates placing the full harm closer to $1.3 billion. Asset recovery efforts are ongoing, including the sale of Guo's luxury apartment overlooking Central Park as part of efforts to return funds to defrauded investors.
