Bitcoin Could Mark the End of Authoritarian Governments, Says US Lawmaker

A US lawmaker has described Bitcoin as potentially 'the beginning of the end' of all authoritarian governments. Representative William Timmons (R-SC) made this statement during a House roundtable on cryptocurrency use under authoritarian rule, which he convened as chairman of the Subcommittee on Military and Foreign Affairs.

The session, titled 'Two Sides of a Digital Coin', focused on how decentralized digital assets can help people facing state controls over money, banking access, and information. Timmons emphasized that Bitcoin is more than just a financial tool for those living under repressive rule, stating it can also be an essential tool for dissidents, journalists, and activists who risk everything to get the truth out.

The lawmaker highlighted the importance of maintaining leadership in the development and regulation of digital assets, particularly in light of China's influence on state-controlled digital currency, surveillance-based financial systems, and cross-border payment infrastructure. He warned that this could advance Beijing's geopolitical objectives.
