Miami Man Arrested for $1.9 Million Bitcoin Theft from Former Employer

A 40-year-old IT specialist has been arrested in connection with a $1.9 million Bitcoin theft from his former boss.

The victim, who had purchased the cryptocurrency as an investment in December 2017, entrusted the suspect with setting up and securing the wallet's setup and security. The suspect, Nahum Reynaldo Castro, had worked for the victim since 2013 and was tasked with handling the wallet's setup and security.

Castro continued working for the victim until 2024, during which time he allegedly stole the Bitcoin from the secure safe where it was stored. It wasn't until July 2025, when the victim opened the safe to access the wallet during a move, that he discovered the theft.

The case highlights the risk of entrusting a single person with the setup and security of a digital asset wallet, as well as the challenges in recovering stolen funds from Bitcoin transactions, which are recorded on a public blockchain but cannot be reversed.
