US DOJ Drops Charges Against Alleged Crypto Fraudster Goettsche
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly planning to drop charges against Matthew Goettsche, accused mastermind behind the BitClub Network crypto Ponzi scheme.
Prosecutors had alleged the scheme defrauded investors of about $722 million, with trial scheduled for October. However, the DOJ now plans to dismiss the criminal case while continuing efforts to recover money for victims.
This move is seen as another example of the Trump administration's broader pullback in crypto-related criminal enforcement.
Several co-defendants have already pleaded guilty, and Goettsche's legal team had reportedly lobbied senior DOJ officials for dismissal.
