Toss Taps Optimism to Bring Onchain Payments to 30 Million Users
Optimism, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Viva Republica, the company behind South Korea's popular financial super-app Toss, to explore blockchain-based payment infrastructure. This partnership aims to put everyday payments onchain for Toss's massive user base of up to 30 million users and over 500,000 merchants.
The three-month proof-of-concept (PoC) will test a Korean won-pegged stablecoin built on the OP Stack, which serves as the blockchain backbone. Sunnyside Labs, a privacy-focused developer, will deploy its Privacy Boost technology to handle KYC and AML compliance requirements.
Toss is exploring blockchain-based payments through multiple ecosystems, including a separate MOU with the Solana Foundation in June 2026 for remittance applications. The company has reportedly signaled interest in issuing a stablecoin as early as March 2026, giving the Optimism MOU a concrete technical framework and a compliance partner.
