Singapore Cops & Exchanges Thwart Over $4.2M in Scam Losses
The Singapore Police Force and major cryptocurrency exchanges collaborated to prevent more than $4.2 million in potential losses from scams. Through blockchain analysis and direct police intervention, authorities identified over 145 potential scam victims before funds were lost.
The operation, which took place between April 16 and May 31, used tools from Chainalysis and TRM Labs to examine activity connected to various scam categories, including government official impersonation, investment, job, and love scams. The analysis helped authorities identify people at risk of transferring cryptocurrency, and investigators then worked with exchanges to connect suspicious activity with customers who could be contacted.
The cooperation between the Singapore Police Force and cryptocurrency exchanges created a direct path from suspicious blockchain activity to preventive intervention. Coinbase, Coinhako, Gemini, Independent Reserve, OKX, StraitsX, and Upbit participated in the police-led operation, providing timely customer information that helped officers carry out more than 145 targeted interventions.
The Singapore Police Force emphasized their commitment to working closely with cryptocurrency exchanges and other private sector partners to combat cybercrime. They plan to continue proactive and intelligence-driven operations to safeguard the public.
