Bithumb Slapped with $136K Fine for Sharing User Data Overseas
Bithumb, one of South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has been fined $136,000 by the country's Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) for breaching personal information protection rules.
The PIPC investigation found that Bithumb shared user data overseas without obtaining separate consent from users during order book sharing and virtual asset transfer with overseas exchanges. This included transferring user information to 13 foreign exchanges between September and November 2025, as well as sharing Tether (USDT) order books with BingX.
The PIPC emphasized the importance of complying with personal information protection regulations, especially when transferring data for anti-money laundering purposes. Bithumb has been under intense scrutiny from authorities in South Korea, having faced a six-month suspension of its activities earlier this year due to alleged violations of the Financial Information Act.
