Ethereum's Path to Zero-Knowledge: A Shift Towards a Faster, More Affordable Network

The Ethereum community is accelerating its efforts to transition towards Zero-Knowledge (ZK) protocols, which could make the network faster, more affordable, and secure. According to Joe Lubin, CEO of Consensys, this shift could happen within three to five years, with ZK proofs becoming the foundation of Ethereum's architecture.

Lubin believes that layer 1 must evolve, and that ongoing innovations can make the rollup-focused roadmap more effective. He emphasizes the importance of strengthening Ethereum's base layer through initiatives like Lean Ethereum, which could simplify the protocol and integrate advanced zero-knowledge cryptography.

The goal is to connect existing capabilities rather than multiplying isolated networks. Lubin notes that some layer 2 technologies should establish themselves as essential building blocks, while others might lose importance if they do not provide clear value.
