White House Reaffirms Support for Developer Protections in CLARITY Act
The White House has reaffirmed its support for developer protections in the CLARITY Act, a key component of the broader crypto bill being reviewed by the Senate. The Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act (BRCA), introduced by Senator Cynthia Lummis in January 2026, aims to prevent non-controlling developers from being categorized as money transmitters.
Patrick Witt, Trump's crypto advisor, emphasized that outlawing code would drive financial innovation offshore and undermine the US's position as a global leader in cryptocurrency. The proposed protections have been widely hailed by the crypto industry, with Kristin Smith, president of the Solana Policy Institute, calling them 'foundational'.
However, some critics argue that the Administration's commitment to developer protections is questionable given its handling of high-profile cases like Tornado Cash. Investment bank TD Cowen has projected that if no progress is made on the CLARITY Act by May, it will likely be pushed to 2027, subject to the outcome of the November midterm elections.
