Aave Crisis Solved in Under Six Hours by 1inch Emergency Routing
A recent crisis in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space was averted thanks to the rapid response of 1inch, a popular aggregator platform. ETH withdrawals on Aave froze due to a security exploit, leaving users exposed to liquidation risks. However, within six hours, 1inch enabled emergency routing, allowing users to redeem frozen assets and regain control over their exposure.
The crisis was triggered by an advanced attack on LayerZero infrastructure, which allowed attackers to spoof authentication and pledge false assets on Aave as collateral. The exploit took advantage of a cross-chain vulnerability, highlighting the need for better validation frameworks and multiple independent validators.
Fluid, one of the largest borrowers on Aave, quickly developed the aWETH Redemption Protocol, a scheme that enables users to redeem frozen aWETH positions into liquid assets without leaving Aave. 1inch then integrated this solution into its routing infrastructure, using its Pathfinder algorithm to enable efficient liquidity routing.
