Surgoinsville Regulates Emerging Technologies

The Surgoinsville Board of Mayor and Aldermen has taken steps to regulate emerging technologies within the city limits.

At its latest meeting, the board voted unanimously to define and regulate cryptocurrency mining centers and artificial intelligence training facilities. The zoning amendment prohibits these facilities from operating within 1,000 feet of residential areas.

The decision comes after a proposed crypto mine in Bulls Gap sparked a countywide ban using the County Powers Act. However, this ban has been challenged by ExoticRidge Crypto Company.

In related news, the board tabled a vote to authorize Mayor Merrell Graham to execute a contract with the First Tennessee Development District for local planning advisory services. Vice Mayor Randall Collier expressed concerns about the value of these services, stating that meetings are infrequent and the cost is around $12,000 per year.

The board also authorized an internal cooperation agreement with the Third Judicial District Drug Task Force, which will assist the Surgoinsville Police Department in investigations. Additionally, they approved a budget amendment to the current year and an ordinance adopting next year's budget, which will be finalized at their May 11 meeting.
