Indian Authorities Crack Down on Transnational Crypto Scam Network
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India has made a significant arrest in its efforts to combat transnational cryptocurrency scams. Sunil Nellathu Ramakrishnan, a resident of Mumbai, was taken into custody on suspicion of being a key figure in a network that operates out of Myawaddy, Myanmar.
The CBI alleges that the scam network lured Indian citizens to the compounds under false pretenses, promising them legitimate employment opportunities. Once at the compounds, victims were subjected to physical abuse and forced to participate in cryptocurrency investment scams, known as 'pig-butchering' schemes.
Interpol has classified this network as a transnational criminal threat, with reported victims from over 60 countries worldwide. In related developments, authorities in the United States have previously frozen $580 million worth of cryptocurrency assets linked to the scam. One organizer involved in the scheme was also sentenced to 20 years in prison.
