This sudden spike has prompted a petition calling for an investigation into the facility's impact on local power costs. The petition, which has garnered over 600 signatures, aims to bring the issue before the city council.

Experts warn that this trend may not be isolated to Jellico alone. The rapid growth of data centers and cryptocurrency mining operations could lead to higher wholesale generation costs nationally by 2030, according to a Carnegie Mellon University modeling brief.
