Base Unveils MCP Gateway for On-Chain DeFi Interactions with AI Interfaces

Base has made a significant step forward in the development of its MCP Gateway, which enables users to interact with on-chain DeFi applications through their preferred AI interface. The tool allows natural language prompts to initiate various blockchain actions, including portfolio tracking, fund transfers, and token swaps.

The authentication process uses OAuth 2.1, ensuring that no private keys are held by the server and that user approval is required for sensitive transactions. This means that users can interact with the blockchain directly through their existing AI tools without having to switch between multiple applications.

Base's MCP Gateway supports six DeFi protocols at launch, including Morpho and Moonwell for lending markets, Uniswap and Aerodrome for swaps and liquidity pools, Avantis for perpetual trading, and Bankr and Virtuals for token launches and agent tokens. Developers can extend the system by writing custom skill plugins using markdown specifications.

The move is part of a broader push towards an 'agentic onchain economy' where AI agents function as practical interfaces for decentralized applications. Base has indicated that additional skill plugins and ecosystem integrations are planned, encouraging developers to build their own using the published specification framework.
