Toncoin Community Votes Overwhelmingly to Rename Native Token
The Toncoin (TON) network is undergoing a significant change as the community has voted to rename its native token from 'Toncoin' to 'Gram'. This proposal, submitted by Telegram and supported by the community, has passed with an impressive majority of 81.22%. The vote concluded on June 8, 2026.
The renaming decision is part of the 'Make TON Great Again (MTONGA)' initiative, which aims to revitalize the network. According to the proposal, the change only affects the token name and transaction code, leaving the blockchain's name unchanged. The network will continue to be referred to as 'TON' or 'The Open Network'.
User balances, addresses, smart contracts, and current positions will remain unaffected by this change. For example, a user with a balance of 10 TON will have their assets displayed directly as 10 GRAM. The proposal highlights that the name 'Gram' is not new to the TON ecosystem, having been defined in the network's original technical documentation and used in its core codebase.
The recent improvements to the network, including increased transaction speeds by approximately tenfold and reduced fees by about sixfold, have contributed to Telegram's growing role in the TON ecosystem. As one of the network's largest validators, Telegram has played a significant part in these updates.
