Avalanche Partners with NEC to Develop Biometric-Verified Blockchain Services
Ava Labs and NEC Corporation have partnered to explore on-chain services that combine facial recognition technology with the multichain architecture of Avalanche. The collaboration resulted in a technical whitepaper proposing a two-layer architecture for stablecoin payments with integrated identity verification.
The architecture, which has not yet been implemented as a product, is designed to settle stablecoin payments while verifying user identity without storing biometric data on-chain. This approach addresses the structural limitation of blockchain ecosystems, where chains are efficient at transferring value but struggle to answer who is behind a transaction.
The initial use case targets tourist payments in Japan, which welcomed 42.68 million visitors in 2025 and has a legal framework recognizing fiat-backed stablecoins as electronic payment instruments. Visitors would obtain their FaceVC before arriving; at the point of sale, a single approval would complete both identity verification and settlement.
The partnership between Ava Labs and NEC Corporation aims to provide a more secure and efficient way for people to conduct transactions on-chain while maintaining user privacy.
