Cryptocurrency Security Incidents Reach New Heights in 2025
The cryptocurrency industry has faced significant challenges in recent years, but 2025 marked a particularly concerning period for security incidents. Despite a decrease in the number of attacks compared to previous years, the scale and sophistication of those that did occur reached unprecedented levels.
The Bybit hack was one of the most notable incidents, with losses exceeding $1.5 billion. This breach highlighted a long-held assumption in crypto - that cold wallets are inherently safe - and showed how attackers can manipulate transaction approvals to trick authorized signers into approving malicious transfers.
Other significant incidents included the Cetus protocol exploit, which resulted in losses of over $220 million, and the Bitget incident, which saw losses approaching $100 million due to internal system weaknesses rather than direct blockchain exploits. These attacks demonstrate that centralized exchanges remain attractive targets for hackers.
