DeFi Protocols Unite to Restore rsETH After $293 Million Hack
Following a significant cyberattack on Kelp's restaking platform, DeFi protocols have come together in an attempt to mitigate the damage. The exploit resulted in a massive loss of over $293 million, leading to a liquidity crisis.
A group of prominent DeFi protocols, including Aave, Mantle, EtherFi Foundation, and Lido DAO, has pledged substantial funds towards restoring backing for rsETH. As part of this initiative, dubbed 'DeFI United', over 43,500 Ether (worth more than $101 million) has been committed by these organizations.
The hack involved the unauthorized transfer of Kelp DAO Restaked ETH tokens from LayerZero-powered bridge to Aave v3, resulting in approximately $195 million in bad debt. To address this issue, Aave proposed lending up to 30,000 Ether to its DAO, with other protocols contributing additional funds.
The effort is crucial as it highlights the need for ecosystem collaboration and cooperation among DeFi participants in times of crisis. This incident serves as a reminder that stronger protections, better user education, and improved infrastructure are essential to mitigate the impact of future hacks.
