Crypto Industry Sees Red as France Dominates World Cup Without Major Sponsorships
France's dominant run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has left the crypto industry wondering why it hasn't made its presence felt at the tournament. The team, led by Kylian Mbappe with an impressive six goals, and Ousmane Dembele with four, has not been paired with any crypto sponsorships. In contrast to the Qatar World Cup in 2022, which was flooded with crypto branding from companies like Crypto.com and Algorand, this year's tournament has seen no token launches tied to player NFTs or fan tokens.
The disappearance of major sports deals is a quiet trend that began after FTX's collapse in late 2022. The appetite for nine-figure sports deals evaporated as attention economics became more apparent. Attention is expensive, and converting it into lasting engagement is even harder.
The fan token experiment, which was initially promising, has also failed to gain traction. Socios and Chiliz built an ecosystem around the idea that football supporters would pay crypto premiums for voting rights on trivial club decisions. However, fan tokens mostly functioned as speculative instruments with high volatility, making them unreliable investments.
