Litecoin Network Endures 13-Block Reorganization Following Zero-Day Bug
The Litecoin network faced a significant challenge on April 25 when a zero-day bug caused a 13-block reorganization, temporarily disrupting mining operations.
The bug exploited a flaw in the handling of MWEB transactions, which are a privacy feature introduced in 2022. The attack targeted mining pools by flooding the network with invalid transactions, causing nodes to incorrectly accept certain MWEB transactions.
However, the Litecoin team responded swiftly and deployed a patch within hours, preventing further damage. No funds were lost during the incident, and the network has since resumed normal operation.
The security breach serves as a reminder of the importance of continuous monitoring and testing in cryptocurrencies. It also underscores the need for node operators to update their software promptly and mining pools to implement robust monitoring systems.
