Binance Co-Founder Changpeng Zhao Reflects on Prison Sentence and Crypto Industry

Changpeng Zhao, the co-founder and former CEO of Binance, has spoken out about his time in prison and the current state of the cryptocurrency industry. In an interview with a Taiwanese publication, Zhao reflected on his life and career, which has been marked by both great success and controversy.

Born in Jiangsu, China, but raised in Vancouver by his academic father, Zhao was exposed to the world of finance at a young age. He went on to build trading systems for Bloomberg in Tokyo, New York, and Shanghai, making him financially independent before he even turned 30.

In 2017, Zhao founded Binance, which would go on to become one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. At its peak, Binance had over 300 million users and a trading volume of $34 trillion, surpassing the New York Stock Exchange's full-year stock trading volume.

However, Zhao's success was short-lived as he faced legal troubles with the US Department of Justice. He voluntarily flew to the United States and pleaded guilty to failing to register early US users under the Bank Secrecy Act, resulting in a four-month prison sentence.
