Trump Urges AI Firms to Build Their Own Power Plants
President Donald Trump has launched an initiative to encourage AI companies to build their own power generation facilities for data centers, rather than relying on existing infrastructure. The 'Ratepayer Protection Pledge' aims to shield consumers from increased electricity bills.
The pledge was announced in March 2026 during Trump's State of the Union remarks and has already been signed by seven major tech companies: Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and xAI. These companies have committed to investing in new power generation facilities and covering infrastructure costs themselves.
The move is designed to address the growing demand for electricity from AI data centers, which may require access to double the current US energy capacity. Trump emphasized the necessity of private power plants during a meeting with tech leaders, including Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon's Jeff Bezos.
Texas is at the epicenter of this issue, as both AI infrastructure builders and Bitcoin miners compete for the same energy supply in the state's deregulated market. However, if AI companies build their own generation capacity, it could free up existing supply for other high-consumption users, including crypto mining operations.
