Bessent Seeks Congressional Action on Digital Assets
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on Congress to pass comprehensive legislation regulating digital assets, highlighting the importance of US leadership in this area. Speaking before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Bessent stressed that American dominance in cryptocurrency is vital for maintaining the global standing of the US dollar.
Bessent argued that a proactive regulatory framework would not only secure the primacy of the dollar but also set a standard for other countries to follow. He pointed out that the US can use its anti-money laundering laws and regulations to improve its handling of digital assets, making it a more attractive destination for businesses.
The Secretary's comments come as the Senate Agriculture Committee has made significant progress on related legislation. Bessent emphasized that the US must lead in this area to realize the full potential of digital payments.
