Ethereum Unveils Glamsterdam Upgrade, Paving the Way for Scalable Smart Contracts

The Ethereum network is gearing up for its most significant upgrade since The Merge, and it's called Glamsterdam. This update aims to enhance Layer-1 scaling by improving transaction processing, data handling, and block verification across the network.

Glamsterdam combines two upgrades: a consensus layer upgrade called 'Gloas' and an execution layer upgrade called 'Amsterdam.' The result is an overall system that will be deployed in the latter half of 2026. Developers have already moved into the final development phase, testing the Ethereum system on dedicated networks.

The key improvements include Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS), which will increase scalability by integrating block-building into the protocol itself. Additionally, Block-Level Access Lists will enable more transactions to be processed at once, utilizing computing power more effectively.

The gas repricing bundle is also a crucial aspect of the update, allowing for significant reductions in fees related to Layer-1 transactions. According to industry experts, these changes could lower Layer-1 fees by as much as seventy percent, making on-chain operations more affordable and ensuring a better user experience during peak loads.
