Ethereum Foundation Updates Vision for L1-L2 Relationship

The Ethereum Foundation has published an updated vision for the relationship between its Layer 1 (L1) blockchain and a network of Layer 2 (L2) chains.

The new model emphasizes the importance of a strong L1 foundation, which will scale by orders of magnitude while retaining maximum security and decentralization. At the same time, a growing ecosystem of independent and interoperable L2 chains will offer greater customization and features that any single chain cannot match.

L2s can achieve maximum security and decentralization at lower costs than building their own L1 validator network. They also gain access to more users and developers through secure interoperability with the largest L1 blockchain and a growing network of L2 chains.
