Kraken's FIFA Partnership Tests Crypto's Limits in Global Sports
The FIFA World Cup has kicked off, and with it comes a significant test for cryptocurrencies' integration into global sports. Kraken became the first-ever official crypto exchange supporter of FIFA on June 9, marking a milestone that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
One notable example of this phenomenon is Granit Xhaka, a Swiss midfielder who has generated plenty of headlines as he leads Switzerland's World Cup campaign. Chelsea reportedly had an £8 million bid for Xhaka rejected in late June or early July. Interestingly, Xhaka has Ethereum-based digital cards on Sorare and Panini has released 2026 World Cup NFTs featuring him.
Despite the buzz around Xhaka's transfer news, however, there was no corresponding price movement or volume spike in digital asset markets. This lack of reaction suggests that mainstream adoption in sports is still in its early stages.
