Colombia's Caribbean coast is being eyed as a potential hub for renewable energy-powered mining, thanks to a proposal from President Gustavo Petro.
Petro believes that cities such as Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha could become sites for mining farms powered by surplus renewable energy. The idea is not just about crypto projects, but also about developing the Caribbean region.
The president's proposal comes with a twist: he wants to focus on 'green' mining, using clean energy instead of fossil fuels. This is a departure from his previous criticism of Bitcoin mining based on fossil fuels and its link to global warming.
