Jane Street Accused of Using Telegram Backchannel Before TerraUSD Collapse
A recent court filing has shed light on alleged misconduct by Jane Street, a prominent quantitative trading firm, in the wake of TerraUSD's (UST) catastrophic collapse in May 2022.
The filing, part of the Terraform Labs bankruptcy case, alleges that Jane Street used a private Telegram channel to obtain nonpublic information from former Terraform intern Bryce Pratt, who is now a systems developer at Jane Street. The channel, dubbed 'Bryce's Secret', purportedly provided Jane Street with a backdoor to Terraform insiders, allowing the firm to front-run trading and accelerate the collapse of UST.
The allegations have sparked renewed scrutiny of who profited from the $40 billion Terra ecosystem implosion, one of the crypto industry's largest failures. The claims could also test the applicability of traditional insider trading and market manipulation theories in decentralized finance markets.
