A new bill aimed at regulating cryptocurrency kiosks has been passed by the North Carolina House in an effort to combat scams. The Virtual Currency Kiosk Consumer Protection Act, also known as House Bill 920, would license kiosk operators and impose limits on transactions.
The legislation was introduced last week and has moved quickly through committees. It now heads to the Senate for consideration. Proponents of the bill argue that it is necessary to protect consumers from scams, particularly those over 50 who have been targeted in the past.
According to FBI data, there were over 13,400 complaints related to cryptocurrency kiosks nationwide in 2025, resulting in $389 million in reported losses. In North Carolina alone, there were 491 complaints with over $12 million in losses.
