Solana Flooded With Football-Themed Meme Coins Before World Cup
The Solana blockchain saw an explosion of football-themed meme coins in May, with over 11,184 tokens launched before the FIFA World Cup kick off. This figure is a stark increase from April's 2,143 tokens, representing a 531% growth. The trend tracks the timing of the tournament, which kicked off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The surge in token creation coincided with the pre-tournament window, when squad lists were finalized and fan attention was building. The data shows that May alone produced more football-themed tokens than all of 2024 combined, according to BeInCrypto desk data drawn from Solana fungible-token records.
Trading activity on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) also spiked in line with the token launch boom. Daily DEX buy-side volume for these tokens peaked at roughly $542 million on May 13, making it the single biggest day in the dataset. This buying spread across many coins rather than one breakout name.
The trend is largely a Solana story, with football-themed coin trading volume reaching about $1,569 million in May. This dwarfs rival chains, including Base and Ethereum, which saw buy volumes of $3.1 million and $2.4 million, respectively.
