Lightning Network's Quantum Vulnerability Raises Concerns

Crypto experts are sounding the alarm over the vulnerability of the Lightning Network to post-quantum attacks. Udi Wertheimer, a crypto analyst and developer of Taproot, has warned that the network is structurally weak due to its reliance on shared public keys.

This makes user funds exposed to theft by advanced quantum computers, which could break the encryption. In most on-chain Bitcoin usage, users can reduce exposure by avoiding address reuse, but this defense does not apply to the Lightning Network.

Lightning relies on payment channels, where participants exchange public keys with counterparties, exposing them to potential attacks. If an entity holding these public keys gains access to a CRQC or if such data is leaked, private keys could be derived without user interaction, enabling the theft of funds.
