Bitcoin's Decentralization Dilemma: A Trade-Off between Privacy and Robustness

A fundamental aspect of Bitcoin's architecture has been revealed by Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum. During a recent presentation in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Buterin explained how the original designers of Bitcoin prioritized decentralization over privacy features due to technological constraints.

Buterin noted that achieving both robust decentralization and strong privacy was practically impossible with the cryptographic tools available during Bitcoin's inception period around 2008-2009. This historical context reveals why Bitcoin operates as a transparent ledger where all transactions remain publicly visible, deliberately sacrificing privacy for decentralization.
