XRP Ledger Validators Resist Reserve Cut Amid Security Concerns
The XRP Ledger community is divided over whether to lower reserve requirements for account activation. Validator Hussein Zangana, known as Vet, argues that another reserve cut would weaken protection against spam and resource abuse without equivalent network protection.
Zangana points out that reserves have fallen sharply since XRPL launched in 2012. The base reserve was initially set at 1,000 XRP before Jed McCaleb reduced it to 200 XRP. Validator votes later brought the base reserve to 1 XRP, plus a 0.2 XRP owner reserve for each token or ledger object held.
Critics argue that smaller reserves could encourage spam and disposable wallets, while supporters say cheaper account activation would improve onboarding for people unfamiliar with crypto.
