SEC's 'Crypto Mom' Hester Peirce Leaves Commission for Academia Role
Hester Peirce, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) commissioner known as 'Crypto Mom', is leaving her post in November 2026 to join Regent University School of Law as an associate professor.
Peirce's second term at the SEC ended on June 5, 2025, but she can stay for up to 18 months under SEC rules. Her departure will likely be felt in the crypto industry, where she has been a consistent advocate for clearer rules and written guidance rather than relying on enforcement.
As 'Crypto Mom', Peirce dissented publicly against the agency's enforcement-heavy approach, arguing that it created uncertainty without protecting anyone well. She was a vocal critic of regulating by litigation and pushed for safe harbors and clear definitions.
