Canada Aims to Strengthen Election Security with Crypto Donation Ban

The Canadian government has introduced a new bill aimed at strengthening election security in the country. The Strong and Free Elections Act proposes banning cryptocurrency donations to political parties, citing concerns over foreign interference in elections.

The bill's sponsor, Steven MacKinnon, highlighted the need for measures to prevent anonymous contributions, which can be difficult to track. He stated that the legislation is designed to block foreign interference and other threats to elections, ensuring that they remain free, fair, and secure at all times.

A similar bill was proposed in 2024 but failed to advance past the second reading in the House of Commons. If passed, the new legislation would also expand existing bans on deepfakes that impersonate electoral candidates, which has been a concern in recent elections.
