Canada Aims to Ban Cryptocurrency Donations in Politics
Canada's federal government has taken a significant step towards regulating cryptocurrency donations in politics. A proposed amendment to the Canada Elections Act, known as the Strong and Free Elections Act, aims to ban political parties from accepting cryptocurrency, money orders, and prepaid cards as contributions.
The legislation follows a recommendation from the chief electoral officer to prohibit crypto political donations outright due to difficulties in identifying contributors. The move is part of a broader effort to curb anonymous and hard-to-trace contributions, which are seen as a risk factor for foreign interference.
